The attacks of 9-11, followed by a continuous stream of terrorist
incidents worldwide, such as the Madrid trains attack in 2004, the
London Public transportation system attacks in 2005 and the recent
Peroxide Based Liquid Explosives threat at London Heathrow airport,
have transformed our thinking about security at public places. One
of the highest-priority threats to Homeland Security is explosives
and their growing availability to militant organisations. Even in
small quantities, IED’s (Improvised Explosives Devices) can
bring down airplanes, blast trains, destroy public places and ultimately
cause death to hundreds of innocent people.
